Blogmas 2017!

Hi Readers

December is about to begin and that means two things. Christmas is on it’s way and it’s blogmas time!

From the first of December to the 24th of December I will be posting on here every single day. I’ll be doing tags, top 5 Wednesday and all sorts of festive posts.

If you have anything you’d specifically like me to do then let me know because I do have a few gap days that I still need ideas for.

I love this time of year and blogmas makes it a whole lot more fun. I can’t wait!

Authors I Dream To Write Like

Note: Top 5 Wednesday was created by GingerReadsLainey and is hosted by ThoughtsonTomes on the Goodreads Group.

Hi Readers

This weeks T5W topic is in honor of it being NaNoWriMo. So today I am going to share with you the authors whose talents I am envious of. Here they are:

Lin Manuel Miranda: Okay, so he hasn’t written a book. But he did write the lyrics for Hamilton and they are fire. Seriously, I wish I could write like that.

Patrick Rothfuss: He hasn’t written a lot of books but that’s probably down to them being so lengthy and full of detail. His writing is what made Name of the Wind for me.

Jane Austen: Maybe a bit random but this year I read all of her books and was stunned by the writing. It’s a style where you have to read every word carefully of you miss something and can completely interpret a scene wrong.

Ali Smith: If you’ve ever read a book by her you will know her writing it lyrical and flawless. Some say it’s style over substance but her books have always stunned me.

J.R.R. Tolkien: With him I’m more in awe of the world he created and the detail he put into it. His imagination was endless.

Let me know if you did this weeks T5W!

Weekend Reads #11

Hi Readers

This weekend I plan on finishing two books. Both of which I am reading for the Tome Topple Readathon.

First I plan on finishing Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood which I just started today. I’ve been meaning to read this for ages now and, even thought it’s technically 2 pages under 500 pages, I thought I’d let it slide so I could speed through it during this readathon.

I also want to read more of The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss which I started last weekend but I put it down because I was liking it but it was slightly boring me and I needed a break. I still have 300 pages to go so I won’t judge it yet and I will definitely finish it before the readathon ends next Friday.

Let me know what you plan on reading this weekend.

Thanks for reading,

Books I’m Thankful For

Note: Top 5 Wednesday was created by GingerReadsLainey and is hosted by ThoughtsonTomes on the Goodreads Group.

Hi Readers

We may not celebrate Thanks Giving here in the UK but there’s never really a bad time to think about the books you are thankful for. So, in no particular order…

Peter Pan – While this is definitely a very different story reading this as an adult I have such a vivid memory of reading this when I was 9 and loving it.

Shadow Forest – Same with Peter Pan I have such a vivid memory of reading this when I was 10. I read it with my year 6 class and I feel like it’s a book that entire class will remember because we all loved it so much.

Pride and Prejudice – The first classic I fell in love with and it definitely made me give other classics a go.

Perks of Being A Wallflower – You guys know how I feel about this book. It just gets me.

Harry Potter – I feel like this is going to be in a lot of this weeks T5W posts.

Let me know what book you’re most grateful for!

Thanks for reading,

Bedroom Decorating

Hi Readers

Non-bookish post today. The walls in my bedroom have been looking a little tatty for a while now so I took it as the perfect opportunity to re-decorate my room and change it up a little bit.

BeFunky Collage.jpg

I went with a pink, grey and copper/rose gold theme this time around and I love how it goes with my white furniture (which I painted a few years ago).

I chose a geometric wallpaper from Graham & Brown that I found in B&Q and got a few copper/rose gold accessories including a fake succulent from The Range (who have a great range of fake indoor plants at the moment).

I also have some pictures dotted around. A couple of my family in copper frames and I also recently framed a poster of Taylor Swift that came with her new album. It’s such a gorgeous picture and I had to have it on my wall.

Also from The Range I got a new light shade that I am in love with. It’s a forest scene that just looks magical when you turn the light on.

And then the most expensive new addition to my room is the curtains and matching duvet set from Julian Charles. I got these for £20 each in the sale although I think the curtains were supposed to be twice that but it scanned as £20 so we got them for that (result!).

Taylor Swift’s ‘reputation’ – Gush

Hi Readers

Reputation is out and it is wonderful. Now I want to talk all the feels, all the thoughts and all the emotions with you.

You may not know this about me but I have been a hardcore fan of Taylor Swifts for 10 years now and honestly I am so proud of her for making this album. Admittedly I had my doubts about it, especially after the first single came out, but she did not disappoint me. Seriously. I haven’t listened to anything else since Reputation was released.

I am going to talk about the songs individually starting with ‘least favourite’ (although I don’t despise any of the songs) to ‘the songs I can’t stop listening to because I am obsessed with them’.

Look What You Made Me Do –

This is what started my doubts about reputation. When I first heard it I really did not like it. I don’t hate it now and I really like the verses, but I do sometimes skip it. I do love ‘I’ll be the actress staring in your bad dreams’.

So It Goes… –

I feel like Taylor albums always has that one song for me that I find beautiful but forgetful (sorry Taylor). 1989 was This Love, RED was Sad, Beautiful, Tragic. This is reputations.

King of My Heart

I don’t really like the sound on this one just before the chorus starts. Kinda hurts my ears. This is kind of like the Bad Blood of this album. There are parts of the song that don’t belong in the song. But I do like the end verse with ‘say you fancy me not fancy stuff yes all at once this is enough.’

Dancing With Our Hands Tied

I can imagine this playing in school discos and getting everyone on the floor. This almost has an old time feel to it (or is it just me?) This captures how freeing it can feel to dance with the one you love in a crowd of people and just feeling on top of the world.

This is a song about fancying someone on a night out. It’s kind of a break from the songs about the heavy emotions and is just fun, cute and flirty.  I love the lyric ‘guess I’ll just stumble on home to my cats… alone… unless you wanna come along *wink*.

End Game –

This song is smooth and almost hip hop but, honestly, could’ve done without Futures bit. Not because I don’t like his music but I just don’t think his verse adds anything (plus, I wanted more Ed.) I do love the ‘I swear I don’t love the drama, it loves me’ line.

…Ready For It? –

Baby, let the games begin. This is such a great opener for the album. Plus I love the music video. Favourite lyric, ‘Burton to this Taylor’.

Delicate –

It wouldn’t be track 5 if it was an emotionally vulnerable song. With the lyrics ‘my reputation’s never been worse, so you must like me for me’ and the fact that it’s called Delicate shows the uncertainty at the beginning of a relationship.

Dress –

This is a very sexy song that the more I listen to it, the more I like it. So many great lyrics in this song. I love ‘I’m spilling wine in the bath tub, you kiss my face and we’re both drunk’ and the entire end verse with ‘even in my worst times, you could see the best in me.’ Beautiful. She seems to be really happy.

I Did Something Bad –

This is where we get into the songs I’m obsessed with. I lost my shit when she said shit, also ‘they’re burning all the witches even if you aren’t one, so light me up’ is going on my grave.

Don’t Blame Me –

This song. Her voice has improved so much on this album and it’s most relevant on this song. The notes she hits are insane.

Getaway Car

Instant new favourite, and I feel like that’s a shared consensus with anyone who’s listened to this album. I really hope this gets a music video that follows the Bonnie and Clyde theme.

Call It What You Want

When this came out as a promotional single it was the first time when I thought ‘okay, this album has the potential of becoming my new favourite thing.’ It’s so beautiful, so personal. It’s emotionally raw and honestly, Joe Alwyn, you’re doing great sweety. This whole song is perfection.

New Years Day

This is a very loud album with a lot of electronic instruments and a lot of emotions. When I first listened to it I danced so much I was worn out. Then this came on. This quiet acoustic song with just a piano and a gentle guitar. It felt like the end of a party does. When you can almost hear the quiet (if that makes sense.) Also this has one of the most beautiful lyrics I have ever heard ‘please don’t ever become a stranger whose laugh I could recognise anywhere.’ Ugh, it’s beautiful.

This Is Why Can’t Have Nice Things

Swifties new bad ass anthem. Just a huge middle finger up to probably and whole bunch of people and I am LIVING FOR IT. She basically sings this as if she is dealing with children. Favourite lyrics (there’s a lot.) ‘did you think I wouldn’t hear all the things you said about me? ‘But I’m not the only friend you’ve lost lately, if only you weren’t so SHADY.’ ‘Here’s to my real friends, they don’t care about the he said she said.’ And finally ‘here’s to you, cause forgiveness is a nice thing to do… HAHAHA I CAN’T EVEN SAY IT WITH A STRAIGHT FACE.’ This is the petty I live for. Ugh, it’s so fun.

So those are my thoughts and feelings on reputation. Let me know your favourite song on this album.

Jess X

Book Tag: This Or That

Hi Readers

I was tagged by Chelsea from Spotlight on Stories.

1) Which Is Your Oldest Book and Your Newest?

In terms of when I bought them…

Oldest: I got The Secret Garden by Frances Hogsen Burnett when I was really young, maybe when I was 6.

Newest: I actually haven’t bought a book in ages. I think the last one I bought was Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte.

2) Which Is Your Biggest Book and the Smallest Book? (in terms of book size not page length)

Biggest: Harry Potter Film Wizardry (amazing book if you want to know more about the HP films.)

Smallest: The Collectors Library books I have are so tiny. I have two, Pride and Prejudiced and Jane Eyre.

3) Show the Longest Book You Own and the Shortest (in page length)

Longest: Technically Lord of the Rings although I do have the edition where it’s split into three parts.

Shortest: Animal Farm by George Orwell. It’s under 100 pages but it’s a really compressed edition.

4) Which Is Your Most Expensive Book and Which Was the Best Bargain?

Most Expensive: Hamilton: The Revolution was pretty expensive but I got it for my birthday.

Best Bargain: I reckon Mists of Avalon again. I spent 20p for over 1000 pages. I just need to read it.

5) The Most Beautiful Cover On Your Shelves and Which Has the Ugliest?

I hate picking the prettiest so I won’t, but the ugliest has got to be my Wordsworth edition of Count of Monte Cristo.

6) What Is Your Favourite Book and What’s One That You Hated?

Favourite: Perks of Being a Wallflower. Beautiful book.

Hated: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I detest it.

7) Name A Book That Made You Cry and One That Made You Laugh

Made Me Cry: Clockwork Princess

Made Me Laugh: My Family and Other Animals. That family was hilarious.

8) Name A Book That Warmed Your Heart and One That Made You Shiver

Warmed my heart: Pride and Prejudice.

Made You Shiver: Handmaids Tale.

9) What’s One Book You Can’t Wait to Read and One That You’ve Been Putting Off

Can’t Wait to Read & I’ve Been Putting Off: The Name of the Wind fits both of these. I’ve put it off because the series is still unfinished but I’m dying to read it. I will. Soon.

10) Recommend A Book You Want More People To Read and One That Wasn’t As Good As Expected

Back to my favourite and least favourite. Everyone should read Perks, and I so hoped Cursed Child was going to be amazing.

11) The Next Book You Want To Buy and the Next One You’ll Be Getting Rid Of From Your Shelves

Next to Buy: I really want the Prisoner of Azkaban illustrated edition. But Christmas is soon so I’ll have to wait till then.

Getting Rid Of: I’ve decided I’m never going to read the Chaos Walking series, so it’s time to get rid of them.
